“Why do you love a thing that won’t even let you exist within their made up worlds?”—Pam Noles, from her essay “shame” on PoC in fantasy worlds. I am tired of seeing just white faces on screen. (via weallcomplete)
The neo-Nazis over at Stormfront were the first to start passing off this photo of one, “Trayvon Martin,” (Here’s the link to Facebook) in an attempt to show that the now deceased Trayvon Martin was some sort of gangster. Judging from many of the comments, I guess some folks are literally attempting to justify a possible murder – on their way to church!
One small detail I must point out; this photo that is being passed around on Facebook and right-wing blogs, is NOT the same Trayvon Martin who was gunned down by George Zimmerman.
I’m just waiting for someone to tell me that, while the photo may be fake, the story is still true. Ugh… Conservatives have a way of never letting things like facts get in their way.
Freethinking Foxholes Series: First Afterthoughts on the Reason Rally and Fox News' attempt to "rain on the parade"
Yesterday, I along with as much as probably over 10,000 freethinkers, skeptics, atheists, and agnostics gathered at the National Mall in Washington DC for the first ever Reason Rally. Speakers and entertainers included David Silvermann, president of American Atheists, Professor Richard Dawkins, comedian Eddie Izzard, Jamila Bey, YouTube atheist vlogger Cristina Rad, and Nate Phelps, son of Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church. Freethinkers and nonbelievers gathered in solidarity to show our government and our country that we are here, we are out, and we will NOT be silenced any longer.
But of course, along with the weather from yesterday, Fox News.com just HAD to try to rain on our “parade” with an op piece called, "The Rally for Nothing in Particular". I know not to expect serious commentary or even a speck of truth within anything coming from Fox News, but man. It’s as if the writer, Larry Alex Taunton, didn’t even try to show knowledge on what the rally was about, or knowledge of what atheism really is, instead leaning on the good ole crutch of misinformation, ignorance, & strawmans on the subject, coupled with the “atheism is a religion” argument. Seriously, Larry? Maybe you should’ve just called your editor and told him you needed a couple days off or something. But then again, you work for Fox News, and this is an opinon piece. You’re just spouting a misguided opinion, sadly held by a mass amount of people, and you’re doing nothing but appealing to that base. Good for you.
I won’t waste anymore time on this “article”, as there are more levelheaded articles written by CNN, NPR, and the Washington Post regarding this past Saturday’s Reason Rally. If nothing, this article is proof that the biggest critics of nonbelievers have no idea who or what we really are.
I’ll make another post with my thoughts on the Rally itself soon.
“Why are you so sensitive? Everyone’s a little bit racist. Racist jokes about white people are made every day, you need to get over it already. White slavery has been gone for like, ever, so stop acting like I personally enslaved you. White people joke about themselves and say cracker all the…
